Autumn 2026 | Languages, Sport and Youth in Minority Language Contexts

Resumen: En este seminario presentaremos los proyectos de investigación-acción que hemos desarrollado durante la última década en el ámbito deportivo del País Vasco: D ereduko kirola, Kirolkide y Hizkuntza eta genero olatuak.

Partiendo de la experiencia investigadora, expondremos algunas de las cuestiones metodológicas y técnicas surgidas durante el proceso etnográfico. Esta labor etnográfica se basa en herramientas teórico-metodológicas proporcionadas por la Antropología de la lengua, la Etnografía de la infancia y adolescencia y la Antropología feminista. Los distintos proyectos nos han permitido analizar las prácticas e ideologías lingüísticas de las personas participantes en diferentes clubes vascos, además de promover y acompañar pequeños cambios sociolingüísticos orientados al incremento del uso de una lengua minorizada como el euskera.

La exposición se centrará en tres aspectos. Primeramente, hablaremos de cómo, desde el diseño de las investigaciones, intentamos dotar a nuestros trabajos de un carácter transformador, utilizando técnicas encaminadas a la reflexión sociolingüística y a la generación de cambios en las prácticas lingüísticas, y apostando por formas de devolución y difusión de los resultados mediante productos multimodales, como páginas web y materiales audiovisuales.

Además, queremos compartir algunos de los conceptos propuestos a la hora de analizar sociolingüísticamente estos espacios deportivos, como tercer espacio, pequeñas culturas y espacios seguros. Finalmente, reflexionaremos sobre los resultados partiendo de algunas escenas etnográficas en las que se muestran: las jerarquías lingüísticas entre lenguas; la relevancia de categorías como el género y la edad en las prácticas lingüísticas; la importancia del conocimiento en profundidad de cada práctica deportiva, cada club y las personas que participan en ellos; y la necesidad de una planificación lingüística en un ámbito tan importante en nuestra sociedad contemporánea.

Abstract: In this seminar, we will present the action-research projects we have developed over the last decade in the Basque Country’s sports sector: D ereduko kirola, Kirolkide and Hizkuntza eta genero olatuak.

Drawing on our research experience, we will discuss some of the methodological and technical issues that arose during the ethnographic process. This ethnographic work is based on theoretical and methodological tools provided by the Anthropology of Language, the Ethnography of Childhood and Adolescence, and Feminist Anthropology. The various projects have allowed us to analyse the linguistic practices and ideologies of participants in different Basque clubs, as well as to promote and support small sociolinguistic changes aimed at increasing the use of a minoritised language such as Basque.

The presentation will focus on three aspects. First, we will discuss how, from the research design stage onwards, we strive to give our work a transformative character. We employ techniques aimed at encouraging sociolinguistic reflection and generating changes in language practices, while using multimodal methods, such as websites and audiovisual materials, to disseminate and share our findings.

We will also discuss some of the sociolinguistic concepts proposed for analysing these sporting spaces, including third spaces, small cultures, and safe spaces. Finally, we will reflect on the findings through ethnographic scenes that reveal: linguistic hierarchies between languages; the relevance of categories such as gender and age to language practices; the importance of in-depth knowledge of each sport, each club, and the people who participate in them; and the need for language planning in this crucial area of contemporary society.

Jone Miren Hernández García holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), where she currently teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses. For three decades, she has researched issues relating to Basque language and culture from a feminist perspective. She is a member of the AFIT Feminist Anthropology Research Group.

Jaime Altuna Ramírez graduated in Social Anthropology from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), where he also obtained a Master’s degree in Feminist and Gender Studies. His doctoral thesis is entitled Hizkuntzaren funanbulistak. Hizkuntza-sozializazioa kirol eremuan adin eta generoan ardaztuta (Linguistic Tightrope Walkers: Linguistic Socialisation in the Field of Sport, with Particular Attention to Age and Gender). He has worked in non-formal education since 1994 and is currently a lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Social Work at UPV/EHU. In recent years, he has participated in several research projects relating to linguistic anthropology, the ethnography of childhood and adolescence, and feminist anthropology.
